Wat Phnom - A Beloved Cambodian Icon

By Pushpitha Wijesinghe

Cambodian legend has it that, 700 years ago, the wealthy village widow Grandmother Penh came across four Buddha statues within a Koki tree that had been uprooted and washed into the river by floods. She enshrined the statues within a pagoda that she had built at the highest point of the city, which is now called Wat Phnom.

Today, this is a major site of pilgrimage for the Cambodians, especially after the devastating atrocities of the Khmer Rouge against the majority of Cambodia's historical heritage. Being built on the highest point of Phnom Penh, the 27-meter artificial hill affords great views of the Ton Le River and surrounding countryside.  Additional shrines reflecting the passing syncretism of Hinduism and Vietnamese myths and beliefs flank the pagoda. Of special interest is the large stupa within which rests the ashes of King Ponhea Yat and the shrine of beloved Vietnamese genie Preah Chau, which is adorned with images of both Lord Vishnu and Confucius. The night-time illumination of the looming clock at the base of the hill is one of the area's most distinctive landmarks.

A grand staircase with engraved images of the traditional nagas and lions stand sentry on either side leads into the east-oriented temple complex. The area is suffused with the cries of street vendors, the rainbow colours of their wares, the aroma of incense and the crush of pilgrims and tourists. The presence of Sam Bo the elephant simply adds to the feeling of carnival; the animal has been trekking up and down the hill since 1983 and is now an unofficial institution of the city. The popularity of the site is partially owed to the new renovations it has undergone and its promotion as a recovered Cambodian cultural site and partly to the local pilgrim tradition of petitioning for good luck and wishes in exchange for offerings of fruit and flowers.

The aforementioned post-Khmer Rouge renovations have not been as successful in preserving the originality of the site. On one hand, the jungle and tree roots have encroached upon so much of the original brick structure of the stupa that it is under the very real threat of crumbling altogether; on the other hand, the new plaster and paint covering the inner sanctuary mask the historical character of the complex.

However, the many fascinations of the Wat's interior are still well-preserved enough to captivate. A large bronze seated Buddha dominates, flanked by a host of other effigies garlanded by flowers and incense. Frescoes of the Buddhist Jathaka stories and murals of the Khmer retelling of the Indian epic Ramayana create a pictorial narrative upon the walls.

Grandmother Penh is also honored alongside her historic creation and royalty; a small shrine to the southwest of the Wat houses a plump and smiling statue of the benevolent widow to whom women of the country still turn for good fortune and counsel. The entire site becomes the hub of the city's colour and pageantry during celebrations of Pchum Benh and the Cambodian New Year in April; it is definitely the best season to visit this beloved icon of quintessential Cambodia.

Since the newly-discovered popularity of Cambodia for cultural tourism, finding an adequate Phnom Penh hotel is not a hard task.

Raffles Hotel Le Royal is an internationally-recognized luxury hotel Cambodia, conveniently located at the heart of Phnom Penh.

Bitexco Financial Tower

Bitexco Financial Tower has more than 16 elevators that can reach any position and any floor in the building within 45 seconds. When the building comes into operation, about 10,000 people work there. Because of its size, the project is designed with three basements covering 33,000 square metres (360,000 sq ft) for parking and for equipment for the building's operation. The tower is located on an area of 6,000 square metres (65,000 sq ft) with the floor area of over 100,000 square metres (1,100,000 sq ft). Total estimated cost of this project is more than US$220 million. With the completion, Bitexco Financial Tower is the tallest building in Ho Chi Minh City, reaching 262.5 metres (861 ft) in height. The tallest building in Vietnam will still be the Keangnam Hanoi Landmark Tower at 336 metres (1,102 ft). The tower is mostly made made of steel and glass and shaped as a lotus petal. The lotus is considered a symbol of Vietnamese culture.

The Battle of Hue City

The "Battle of Hue" was a surprise attack which began on the morning of January 31, 1968 in the South Vietnamese city of Hue, and proved to be one of the most costly and time consuming battles during the Vietnam War. It was also known as the "Tet Offensive," because of its occurrence during what was supposed to be a truce due to the celebration of "Tet" or "Vietnamese New Year." The Battle of Hue proved to be one of the most costly and time consuming battles during the Vietnam War. Hue was used as a United States naval supply base, and contained five U.S. military battalions with an estimated 3,000 U.S. Marines, 2,000 U.S. Army soldiers, and about 11,000 South Vietnamese Army (A.R.Vn) soldiers.

North Vietnamese forces of the People's Army of Vietnam and The Viet Cong were around 12,000 strong. Viet Cong forces targeted the Tay Loc Airfield and the headquarters for the 1st A.R.Vn Division, located in the "Citadel", and the U.S. Military Assistance Command Center of Vietnam or MACV which was located south of the Huong River. At 2:33 in the morning, an NVA flare was shot off and lit the sky giving North Vietnamese forces the "go ahead" for the attack. At that time the 6th N.V.A. Regiment commenced an attack on the western flank of the Citadel, while the 4th Regiment made an attack on the Military Assistance Command Compound located in southern Hue.

Immediately, 1st Ordnance Company of the A.R.Vn linked up with B.P.Co. ("Black Panther" Company) and halted the 800th NVA Battalion's advance for several hours later in the morning. During that time the 802nd NVA battalion proceeded to attack A.R.Vn's 1st Division headquarters at the Mang Cu. Compound. Around 200 men, comprised of officers and civilian defensive forces, managed to keep 1st Division's headquarters secure until Black Panther Company was able to reach and assist them in fending off enemy attacks.

Around 8 a.m. N.V.A. troops raised the symbolic flag of the Viet Cong over the Citadel. U.S. Marines Commanding Officer in Hue, Colonel Stan Hughes, was stationed at the Phu Bai Airfield ten miles from Hue City, along with three Marine battalions. During the same hours in the beginning of the "Tet Offensive," Marines were dealing with their own attacks. Heavy rocket and mortar rounds were going off and platoons of combination forces, including civilian-soldiers and Marines, were confronted by N.V.A. Infantry.

On the morning of January 31, at 7 a.m. the Marines, C.A.P. and three tanks attempted a counter-attack in Hue. They made it no further than about a quarter mile before they started taking heavy sniper fire. A tank was then destroyed by an RPG, and the offensive came to a halt. All forces had then proceeded to make their way back to the Assistance Command center.

For three weeks Marines, along with U.S. Army and ARVn forces, rigorously battled their way to the Citadel. One street at a time, Allied forces eventually pushed North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops out of Hue. On February 24, 1968, the City of Hue was completely void of Communist forces. When it was all over both fronts had seen heavy losses. North Vietnamese forces suffered over 8,000 casualties; about half of those were killed just outside of the Hue, and 98 were taken in as prisoners of war. Allied forces saw a loss of about 670 killed in action, and a staggering 3,700 men wounded in the fight. The Military Assistance Command Compound reported that over 2,800 civilians were executed, and that 3/4 of the city was destroyed in the process, which began to dampen U.S. public support of the war even more. From then on U.S. forces and funding started to decline. The last American forces stepped out of South Vietnam in early March of 1973.

Tet: Vietnamese New Year

By Quang Truong Minh

Tet is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam which is around late January or early February, depends on each year. It is also an occasion for family reunions and forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hoping for a better upcoming year. This custom has become sacred and secular and, therefore, no matter where they are or whatever the circumstances, family members find ways to come back to meet their loved ones.

Ho Chi Minh City - VietnamVietnamese consider Tet is the national holiday that lasts for three days. However, in practice it can be longer and divided into three periods, before New Year's Eve, New Year's Eve, and the New Year. All of these phases consist of activities and customs are celebrated in Vietnam.

Before New Year's Eve is a period begins one or two weeks before the actual celebration. There are many things to do such as clean and decorate the houses, try to pay all debts or everything borrowed before Tet, buy new clothes and presents for our relatives...

The general atmosphere leading up to Tet is in the bustle of shopping, decorating the house, cooking traditional Tet food and waiting for relatives to return home. In these days, the streets and markets are full of people because a lot of commercial activity will cease during the celebrations; the color Red, symbolizing good luck and happiness is seen everywhere.

To decorate the house, Vietnamese people often display Ochna integerrima, peach flower, kumquat tree...in the living room depending on locality. However, some people also decorate their homes with bonsai and flower plants such as chrysanthemum, marigold symbolizing longevity, in Southern Vietnam and paper white flower, lavender, in Northern Vietnam.

Food preparation plays a major role in Tet celebration. Each family cooks special holiday foods showing the importance of food in its celebration. Some of the food is also eaten year-round, while other dishes are only eaten during Tet. Also, some of the food is vegetarian since it is believed to be good luck to eat vegetarian on Tet. Some traditional foods on Tet are sticky rice (Banh chung), watermelon seeds (Hat dua), pickled onion and pickled cabbage (Dua Hanh), jam...Preparations for these foods are quite extensive.

A host of worship rituals also occur in this period. As the legend goes, each year on December 23 of the lunar calendar, the Kitchen God takes a ride on a carp to the Heavenly Palace to make a report on the affairs of the household on earth and then returns on December 30 to welcome the New Spring. So Vietnamese people often prepare an altar consist of incense, flowers, fruits, and foods to say farewell the Kitchen God. Sticky rice and salt are also offered in the streets to any hungry ghosts who might be wandering in the neighborhood.

These Tet preparations often finish before New Year's Eve. It is the comfortable and interesting time for everyone when finishing Tet preparation, paying all debts or everything borrowed before Tet. It is also the time all members in family gather to enjoy atmosphere of family reunion including deceased ancestors.

Vietnamese believe that their deceased ancestors will visit the family for the holiday through worship of inviting the Ancestors. So they prepare a sumptuous meal to welcome back the ancestors with a worship altar consist of flowers, fruits, candles, incense sticks and foods. Towards the end of the ritual, they will dutifully burn beautifully decorated paper tunics and clothes and even symbolic paper money - items which our ancestors will need in Heaven.

In the New Year's Eve, Vietnamese people often prepare the closely family dinner, celebrate New Year's Eve worship (Cung giao thua) and wait for the sacred moment of the passage from the old to the New Year by viewing sparkling firework.

The beginning of Tet starts on the first day of the lunar month. Traditionally, in the early morning of the first day, Buddhists go to their favorite pagoda; the Catholics go to a pre-midnight mass to pray for happiness, prosperity for their family in the New Year. There is also a tradition called "mung tuoi" (happy new year) in the north and "li xi" in the south. Usually, children wear their new clothes and give their elders the traditional Tet greetings before receiving a red envelope.

Vietnamese people believe that the first person comes to their houses on the New Year Day, who is called the first-foot is very important. They will bring good luck or bad luck for the New Year, so people usually choose who will be their first - foot.

In these days, people try to avoid arguments, or saying any bad things. Sweeping is taboo, since it symbolizes sweeping the luck away. It is also taboo for anyone who experienced a recent loss of a family member to visit anyone else during Tet.

During subsequent days, people visit relatives and friends. Traditionally but not strictly, the second day of Tet is usually reserved for friends, while the third day is for teachers, who command respect in Vietnam.

Vietnamese Tet has quite a few original practices with customs and entertainment that have distinct Vietnamese cultural characteristics. Even though being anywhere in the world, Vietnamese people always remember and keep these customs on Tet holiday. In the framework of this article, a few customs and practices are presented so that readers can better understand the traditional Tet of Vietnam.
