Vietnam Swans v Cambodia Cobras - Phnom Penh

Friendships between Vietnam and Cambodia have been stretched, to say the least, in the past and this weekend this are heating up again as the Vietnam Swans make the 6 hour bus journey to the Kingdoms capital, Phnom Penh, to take on the Cambodian Cobras.

New to International Aussie Rules, the Cobra's, according the massively popular Swans blogs, have put it all on the line, as they prepare to run out on the Northbridge ground in new Jumpers.

While the bookies are monitoring all bets closely due this latest revelation, the Cobra's are expected to start strong, but wither away as the Swans take control in the final quarter.

VietnamandCambodia.com say's grab ya dong and slap 100K on the Swans!

See the poster below for details or head the Vietnam Swans blog for match and club details!

Images From Halong Bay - Vietnam

All the images below are from the UNESCO World Heritgae Site - Halong Bay. Suitated around 170km east of Hanoi, the Bay is a must see for almost all travelers! Read the below paragraph from Wiki Travel to learn more!

"Ha Long" is literally translated as "Bay of Descending Dragons." Prior to the 19th century, this name was not recorded in any document or archive. When mentioning the present-day Quang Ninh Sea or Ha Long Bay, old historical books often referred to them by the names of An Bang, Luc Thuy or Van Don. Not until the late 19th century did the name of Ha Long Bay appear on a French Marine Map. The Hai Phong News, a French newspaper of the time, had an article, Dragon appears on Ha Long Bay, reporting the following story: In 1898 a sub-lieutenant named Lagredin, captaining the Avalanse reported seeing a huge sea snake on Ha Long Bay. This was also witnessed by many of the crews. Thus emerged the European image of the Asian dragon. Whether this appearance of a strange animal looking like a dragon resulted the name of Ha Long Bay is not known - More At Wiki Travel

Laos Travel Tips - How to Show Your Respect

Exotissimo Laos: Perfect Tours at the Best Possible Prices
By Carlton R. Smith

Laos in particular requests visitors to show the proper respect when visiting their country. As with anywhere, visitors and locals alike should pay attention to basic rules of politeness. Making a good first impression will be greatly appreciated by the Lao people, who are often seen as shy and gentle. These quick tips are useful in ensuring the best cultural experience possible.
  • Do not touch a monk: There are over 75,000 monks in Laos. They are highly revered and a sacred part of the Lao Buddhist tradition. They are people of honor and as such we are asked not to touch them or take their picture without asking.
  • Ask before taking a photo: Having your photo taken is a personal matter and asking permission before you take a photo shows the proper respect. In asking first you will find you are seldom turned down.
  • Do not shout: The people of Laos do not shout under most circumstances. You'll find shouting actually gives you the opposite of the desired affect. Instead of paying more attention to you, the person you are shouting at will shy away and not want to be seen with someone making so much noise. They value quiet and peacefulness.
  • Do not put your feet up: To show someone the bottom of your foot or shoe is a sign of disrespect.
  • Do not touch people on the head: Buddhists and animists believe the soul resides on the top of the head, the highest point of the body. Touching someone there disturbs the soul and is a sign of disrespect.

Pradal Serey - Traditional Way of Fighting in Cambodia

By Igor B.

Bradahl Serei is a free style of kick boxing originated in Cambodia for defense is now one of the national sports of Cambodia. According to new rules, moves have been slightly altered but the main focus remains the same which is to win the competition. Though Pradal Serey involves focus on four major strikes which originate from the knees, elbows, fists (punches) and feet (kicks) but they tend to utilize more elbows than that of other regions because success is more visible via elbow techniques. It was believed that Kickboxing and other Martial Arts were started with the Mon Khmer and then the trend continued in Cambodia.

The French were greatly influenced by the Bradahl Serei and adopted it after making certain enhancements like using gloves for protection. The sport was considered atrocious by the Europeans because earlier the matches take place in dirt pits with sea shells wrapped around the arms of boxers along with ropes to make the fight more brutal. Success in Bradahl Serei requires a hostile, antagonistic and fight-oriented attitude along with maximum usage of elbows and knees performing elegant and polished moves.

The match of Bradahl Serei has 5 sets of rounds of 3 minute each along with 2 minutes break inside a 6.1 meter boxing ring. The match is accompanied by traditional Cambodian music and praying rituals called Twai Bongkum Kru. The game was very brutal in earlier days but now some rules like prohibition of blows on the back and genitals, ban of bites and many others have made the game more appealing as a sport.

As Khmer boxing was on the verge of extinction, so Cambodian government lend a supporting hand to save Khmer boxing which has been an important part of the Khmer heritage and made several steps to allure young athletes towards the sport. Bradahl Serei is increasingly becoming popular and the professional fighters involved in the sport gained recognition and earn a living from sponsorships and cash prizes. It has become an alluring sport to many foreigners too like French, Australian, British, Sudanese, Americans and many more who take part in various competitions of this martial art. Numerous gyms have entered in the business of training this sport along with weekly matches that are being telecasted on the television makes up for the motivation of the players. Bradahl Serei meaning free style fighting is a self defensive tool which has now increasingly seen as a popular sport. Enjoy the sports while protecting yourself.

More info and pictures of another Asian martial art preparations with Kalari massage. If you are keen on knowing more about getting yourself a punching bag, we suggest you check out one of our many reviews on the subject. A review for a BOB punching bag.

Backpacking Vietnam

By Adi Arifin

Notre Dame Cathedral - HCMC
The most popular area to backpackers is Pham Ngu Lao in the 1st - out of 16 - district of Ho Chi Minh City. In its strategic location close to the heart of the citym Pham Ngu Lao offers a long array of budget accommodations starting from as low as $5 per night.

History Museum, War Remnants Museum, Giac Vien Pagoda, Museum of Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Ben Thanh Market are just to name some of tourist attraction sites in Ho Chi Minh City. Whilst it is not as beautiful as its northern counterparts, traveling from one tourism attraction site to another is quite easy in Ho Chi Minh. Forget the memory you may got from Hollywood movies about the war, Ho Chi Minh is safe, even to travel around at night.

One of the worth-to-visit sites is Notre Dame Cathedral. Built back in 1870 by French architect Jules Bourard, the cathedral has two 187-meters-high towers, making it one of the icon of Ho Chi Minh for decades. For natural attraction, Mekong Delta is the place to go. Here we can cruise along the river, interact with local people in the floating market, and enjoy beautiful rice field scenery along the river side.

For a different atmosphere we can leave the modern city life of Ho Chi Minh and go to Hoi An. Full of old architectural heritage, Hoi An brings you back to the previous century. Sipping Vietnamese tea at a sidewalk cafe in a full moon night, with colorful silk lampions, traditional music, local kids playing hacky sack, you will find yourself in a mystical ancient land.

Hoi An was once the most important port in South-East Asia and therefore in 1999 UNESCO declared it as one of the world's cultural heritage sites.

Pedestrians and bicycle riders will like Hoi An as motorbikes and cars rarely appear here. In addition to historical sites like The Japanese Covered Bridge which is the icon of Hoi An, Chuc Thanh Pagoda, and Museum of Folklore, Hoi An is also famous for its clothing home industry.

From Hoi An we can take a four hours bus trip to Hue, a city split into two parts by River Perfume. In the days of the Nguyen Dynasty, the northern side of Hue played an important role. The kings of Nguyen Dynasty ruled from The Forbidden Purple City at the northern side of Hue. The buildings of the ancient empire town remains as it was.

Other attractions in Hue include Thien Mu Pagoda, Dieu De National Pagoda, and the tomb of king Khai Dinh. Cruising River Perfume on a tourist boat is another way to enjoy Hue.

Exploring Vietnam will never get completed without going up north where popular tourism sites such as Halong Bay, Cat Bay Island, and Sa Pa hill are located.

Halong Bay offers impressive scenery of soaring karst, tropical forest, caves, and waterfalls. Hiking addicts should find themselves in paradise at Sa Pa. Located at the foot of Fansipan Mountain, Sa Pa has beautiful hill and terraced rice field scenery as well as unique local traditional life.

Halong Bay - Vietnam
So much Vietnam has to offer for backpackers, you can also enjoy it in style. Forget budget accommodations and rent a Vietnam villas for ultimate luxury experience. More than luxury accommodation you can also get customized tours perfectly suited to preference by personal butler.

Lessons of the Vietnam War

By Madan G Singh

Tank at Re-Unification Palace - HCMC
The Atomic Bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima (1945) altered the power equation further. The Japanese surrendered and the French tried to make a come back. But they were badly defeated by the communists under Ho Chi Minh and his commander General Giap. The entire North Vietnam was taken over by the communists while the Southern part remained free of their influence. However a insurrection aided by the Communists from the North was started in South Vietnam.

The power vacuum was filled by the United States, which moved into the South with a vast Army to bolster the regime in South Vietnam. The aim of the USA was to stem the communist influence and for this they positioned almost half a million troops in Vietnam. In addition the US president LB Johnson, after the famous Tomkin Gulf incident ordered the aerial bombardment of military targets over North Vietnam.

The bombing from distant American airbases with heavy B 52 bombers failed to yield the desired results. The war in South Vietnam also failed to take off and the Communist guerrillas (The Viet Cong) harassed the US Army. There were daring attacks against the US troops and after a couple of years the American top brass realized that they could not win the war in Vietnam. In addition the large number of coffins arriving from Vietnam swayed public perception of the war at home in America and the Americans longed for a face saving way to get out of the war.

The war now became a quick sand for the US troops as the US Army realized that fighting on the flat plains of Europe and the Desert sands in North Africa was a different kettle of fish from fighting against the Guerrillas in the thick jungles of SE Asia. The harassed US Army despite tremendous acts of Individual bravery had no option but to call for a withdrawal from South Vietnam. It was a tremendous strategic defeat for US Arms. In fact just after the US withdrew the North Vietnamese over ran the south and established a communist regime there.

With the US involved in a similar fight in Afghanistan, there is a real possibility of a second straight defeat there after Vietnam. The Americans lost in Vietnam because of their lack of will to fight at the later stages of the war. It must be remembered the US forces while in Vietnam did blunt the famous Tet offensive in 1968. There subsequent loss of nerve was their undoing.

The war in Afghanistan is also similar. There are no easy victories and the US will have to show purpose and will to fight in Afghanistan. A loss of nerve like in Vietnam may well hand the US armed forces a defeat. The US Military leadership should be aware of this.

Images From Ho Chi Minh City - Vietnam

With nearly 10 million people, Ho Chi Minh City is by far the largest city in Vietnam. It's a city that never sleeps. Where tall modern buildings, sit next to colonial French villa's. Where motor bikes once ruled, they now fight with cars for space on the mad, often insane city roads.

Funky cafes, international brand names and hip nightclubs fill the city, yet life on the street still continues - for old and young - rich and poor. Plastic chairs and steaming bowls of Pho in the mornings. Rice and banh mi over lunch. Coffee, beer and snacks in the evening.

The city is changing, so do yourself and travel here soon! It won't disappoint!
