In Vietnam finding great food does not have to mean big bills, using a visa card or breaking the bank. The best food is often cheap and can be easily found in any city, through out the country.
Ho Chi Minh's District 1 has some of the cheapest and finest food available. So if you like cheap tucker, busy eateries with plenty of atmosphere and want to give your taste buds the work out they deserve, pick up your chopsticks and grab a table at one of these great venues.
3T Restaurant
29 Ton That Thiep Street, D1.
Perched above the Temple Bar, 3T can simply be described as a smoked filled, beer swilling BBQ mad house!
Cheap, noisy and packed from opening to close, 3T is a favourite with locals, expats and travellers. Go for the house special – BBQ’s cooked at the table – and then get into the seafood hotpots.
3T provides a great local experience and is very easy on the wallet. Expect to wait for a table, but it’s worth it!
BBQ Garden
Corner of Le Thanh Ton and Nam Ky Khoi Nghia
Like 3T, BBQ Garden is a great place to head for BBQ’s. Set outside in a nice courtyard, BBQ Garden is always popular with locals, travellers, expats and tour group. The place is smoky and noisy but the food is great. Dishes include BBQ (cooked at your table), hotpots, seafood, set menus and many more local delights.
Opened for breakfast, lunch and dinner, BBQ Garden can get crazy busy in the evening so get in early or prepare for a 20min plus wait for a table.
Cheap, cheerful, smoky, noisy and good fun!
Quan An Ngon
160 Pasteur Street, D1
Recently moved (used to be in Nguyen Ky Khoi Nghia) Quan An Ngon is consistently packed to the rafters with eager punters fighting for a table.
Ngon is Vietnamese means delicious and while I’m not a big fan of this place, the constant line ups and full tables must mean something! Quan An Ngon serve up small portions of local specialities and much more so it’s a great place to order many and share among friends. Cheap, busy, noisy and expect to wait for a table regardless of the time of day!
