Cambodia - Safe For the Kids Too!

Flag of Cambodia on brick wall

By Fred Tittle

As Nathalie Parize, the French owner of the Villa Langka (14 St 282), points out: "Five years ago you didn't see many families with children. People aren't afraid of Cambodia anymore."   Styled as a "boutique hotel", it has 27 rooms in four categories and a swimming pool to relax by. To underline its family friendly credentials, Parize explains that her bigger rooms have sofas that can be turned into beds for children, adding that the larger rooms suitable for families range from $88 for a deluxe to $120 for a one-bedroom suite.
.
Many of the smaller, family owned and run hotels in Phnom Penh provide bunk beds and cots for families with children. But the excitement of a new city and the inevitable tiredness from sightseeing can make children a noisy handful. Isn't that a problem for other guests?   Not so, says Karen Latade, assistant manager at The Kabiki hotel (22 St 264), which is also a member of the ChildSafe (child protection) network. "I think the kids are well behaved," she says, adding she has never had any complaints about excessive noise.

Like other hotels, the Kabiki provides free internet and cable television, which offers the Star TV network, many different language channels (from French through Italian and Spanish to Khmer, Indian, Chinese and Japanese) and the Cartoon Network, which are popular with the whole family.   The hotel goes even further by offering the free use of bicycles and skateboards, which Latade says are very popular.   Lounging by a swimming pool is a family priority on most days and the Kabiki has two: a small one for children and the main pool, which is quite shallow. Room prices range from $50 for a double to $75 for a family room.

Eric Jay, owner of the Scandinavia hotel (4 St 282), has a different take on noisy and disruptive children. "The truth of the matter with kids is - they break everything," he says. But that doesn't mean the Scandinavia isn't friendly to families. Jay adopted a policy of allowing only one family to stay at the hotel at a time. That's because, he says, other guests complained about not being able to use the swimming pool as it was too crowded with kids.

Although he recognizes the downside of catering for families with children, Jay says he and his staff ensure that the one family which stays at the hotel is well looked after. "We really try to give them a special time," he says. Crayons, coloring books, televisions in every room and his two dogs keep children occupied, he points out.

Safety and security are big concerns for hotels that go out of their way to cater for families. The Billabong hotel (5 St 158) is unequivocal about the kind of guests which are welcome and its website even points out in capital letters that "sex tourists are not welcome".

A spacious, Riviera-style hotel in a tropical garden, its freeform saltwater swimming pool with shaded sitting out areas is just outside the main building, so parents can keep an eye on their children while they splash about, says Andrew Newman. He adds that the grounds are walled in so children cannot wander off and to take the organizational problems off parental hands, it even offers a chauffeur and guide service. Rooms range in price from $36 to $62.   Many hotels in the city such as the Billabong also offer baby sitting services for families that are staying with them.

Cambodia Travel - Exploring One of the Best Destinations in Asia on a Budget

By Bruce Basic

Traveling on your own or joining other travelers to soak in the sights and enjoy a historical tour of Cambodia and other interesting Asian destinations? Give in to the wanderlust in you and prepare for an educational and enjoyable trip to maximize the wonderful opportunity. Pack suitable apparel and don't forget comfortable footwear. Since a focal point of your journey will be to see the breathtaking Angkor Wat and other treasures in the vast Angkor temple complex, you must have suitable footwear that will take you across the moat (which surrounds the famed Cambodian religious structure) to the temple. If you're a first-time traveler, you may check out the internet for an overview of the numerous famous spots you will be trekking to.

At Siem Reap, be ready to be amazed by one of the most photogenic of the temples - Ta Prohm. It stands out amidst giant fig trees and other gigantic creepers ensconcing the stone foundations of the structure. An amazing showcase of architecture melding with nature, this is one of the scenic spots featured in the Tomb Raider movie. Also worth exploring are the many galleries with columns, pavilions, courtyards and ponds that give a reflection of the towering temple.

Besides Angkor Wat, there are small but attractive temples you will most likely see. Aside from the temples, be prepared to be mystified Phnom Penh (with its myriad cultural attractions and fine food, unspoiled countryside with rice paddies, little villages and lost temples all waiting to be explored); and on to Sihanoukville for more exotic food, and the opportunity to bask in some sun & sand; and Ban Lung where scenic spots and ethnic people beckon. You will be interacting with many charming and friendly locals and terrific Asian cuisine of excellent value. It will also be an opportune time to refresh and quench your thirst with Angkor beer, which is simply divine.

The Cambodian temples are six to 10 kilometers away from the Siem Reap town proper. If you're traveling alone on a shoestring budget, there several bargain accommodations at Siem Reap offering a balance of comfort and value for money. There is one which is western-run and is conveniently close to Siem Reap River, and a few minutes' drive from the airport and about seven kilometers from the Angkor Wat. Choose one which is a stone's throw from the main shopping and dining areas of the Old Market and Pub Street as well as some fine waterfront restaurants. Phnom Penh likewise offers high standard hotels. Even with limited funds, a budget traveler can easily get by in Cambodia. The food prices are similar to or go even lower than in Thailand. Food from the street stalls is hygienic and delicious.

If you've arranged and booked yourself in advance and availed of a special packaged hotel rate online, you can proceed to enjoy the exotic surroundings, great facilities and services, plus the best that traditional Cambodian hospitality can offer.

Indeed, your Cambodia travel is a trip unlike any other, and from the Khmer ruins of Angkor Wat, you may wend your way into to other must-visit destinations that fall under the most fascinating world heritage sites.

Vietnamese Money – The Vietnam Dong

© Photographer: Olegmit | Agency: Dreamstime.com
2000 dong bill of Vietnam, 1988
The local currency in Vietnam is the Vietnam Dong (VND). When traveling here it can be quite confusing as you'll be dealing in hundreds of thousands or even millions! So here is the low down on the Dong!

Exchange Rates
.
Currently the exchange rate (Aug 2009) for the Dong is approx:
17800VND = 1USD
1500VND = 1AUD
29000VND = 1GBP
24000VND = 1EUR
For the latest in rates, check out Yahoo! Finance . Here, you can also print a handy "Pocket Guide" showing you what 10USD, 20USD etc is worth in Dong!
    .
    Money, Money, Money!

USD and other major currencies can be exchanged at banks, gold shops and hotels. USD can be used for shopping and also at larger restaurants.
    .
Exchanging money on the streets (or black market) should be avoided as many travelers are
    often cheated.

Travelers Cheques can be exchanged at banks and larger hotels, while credit cards are accepted at many hotels, shops and bigger restaurants. When using credit cards you will be charged an additional 3% fee

Visa cards and some cash cards can be used at ATM’s.

Banks and ATM's can be found through out the country in all major towns/cities. Major banks in Vietnam include:
    ANZ Bank
    Vietcom Bank
    HSBC
    Citi Bank
    Commonwealth Bank
      The Money

      Vietnam uses coins including:
      200vnd
      500vnd
      1,000vnd
      2,000vnd
      5,000vnd
While the Australian made plastic notes include:
      10,000vnd
      20,000vnd
      50,000vnd
      100,000vnd
      500,000vnd
It's technically illegal to take Dong out of Vietnam, plus it is also worthless! So spend up before heading home!

So there you have it - The Vietnam Dong in a nutshell. Enjoy the hundred's and thousands and millions.......!

Adventures Along the Mekong Northern Cambodia

      By Emma Castelo

Ou Svay is a little village about 11km from the Laos / Cambodian border and about 46km from Stung Treng. The village can be reached by taxi or motorbike and makes for an excellent starting point to see the Irrawaddy Dolphins.

From Oh Svay there are two routes you can explore along the river one is North and the other is South and they offer very different experiences

      North to Preah Rumkel

Take a boat ride with the villagers to see the Anlung Cheuteal dolphin pool. One of the last pools of Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong there are estimated to be only about 64 currently remaining. The boat driver will switch off his engine about 100m from the dolphins as so not to disturb them. After watching the dolphins stop of at the mainland which is the start of the trek up Vouen Nhang hill. The climb up the hill takes about an hour and is gentle, passing through forest which makes excellent shade.

At the top the views become clear, enjoy the views over the Si Pan Don area in Laos and see the lower Mekong. This area is right on the Laos / Cambodian border, many people would have heard of this waterfall from Don Khone but approaching from the Cambodian side is an awesome experience, and shows the other side of the waterfall created by the water eroding the softer rock basin downstream.

Take in the views, on one side of the hill you will have views of endless forests into Cambodia while on the other side you will have views over the Mekong making its way up north through fabulous rock formations in the Mekong that stopped the French from transporting their goods within the Indochina region.

After enjoying your picnic lunch start your return trip down the hill again. Going back is easy and you can continue to Preah Rumkel an Ecotourism Site which has been setup to promote sustainable tourism. Have dinner with the local community and spend the night in one of the homestays, the generators normally go out at 9pm so you can have a good nights sleep!

      South to Stung Treng

The following day you can return to Stung Treng via Veun Kham the Laos / Cambodian border town or continue your adventure with a kayaking trip along the Mekong from Oh Svay.

Kayaking along this stretch of the river provides a unique experience unrivalled to any other trip, the experience is not difficult and they are no real rapids but the birdlife sustained by the Flooded forest is delightful.

Starting the trip at Oh Svay kayak down river and you will soon find yourself in the shaded flooded forests of the Ramsar wetlands, the trees are huge and there roots all appear out of the water, the water here supports a large variety of fish and is oxygentated by the waterfalls upstream which supports the whole ecosystem. Listen and watch the birdlife while you float downstream. A tranquil day not to be forgotten. After kayaking through the forest you will arrive at Koh Ky where you can then transfer to Stung Treng by vehicle ending the day with a shower at a nice hotel or for the more adventurous enjoy camping on a sandy island or stay at a nature lodge on the Mekong.

      Can Gio Mangrove Forest

40km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, lies the Can Gio Mangrove Forest, a beautiful wetland area and UNESCO biosphere reserve, a must-see site on any Vietnam luxury holiday, especially for eco-enthusiasts. Dominated by mangrove forest, this area is home to many rare plants, with over 150 botanical species found in the region.

About 20,000ha of mangrove forest can be found here. Living within the forest, are a recorded 18 mollusk, 45 fish, 3 amphibians and 27 crustaceans. Birdlife is also prolific in the area, making it an environment definitely worth preserving, and a worthwhile trip for any nature or bird lover on a Vietnam tour. On a non-environmental level, the area is also an important source of wood and materials, and also plays a role in protecting the coastline from erosion.

      Cat Tien National Park

Also located in Vietnam's south is the Cat Tien National Park, forming 720 km² of tropical rain forests. While the park's fauna may be under threat, it is impressive nonetheless. Large animals such as the Javan rhino, Asian elephant, bear species and buffalo's can be spotted on Vietnam holidays here. And the smaller animals are here in impressive numbers too, with species of gibbon, macaques, deer and shrews all habituating within the park. Birds too, are remarkable in their numbers, with beautiful species such as white-winged ducks, Siamese fire backs, great hornbills and black eagles all residing there.

      Red River Delta

The Red River Delta comprises some 15,000 km² of flat plain. This is a beautiful and unique region, formed by the Red River and its tributaries joining the Thai Binh River. It is well preserved by a dike system, and is rich in agriculture, resulting in a large population. If you want to experience a bit of the Vietnam culture whilst on your holiday, it would be an interesting day trip when staying at a luxury Vietnam hotel.

      Western Nghe An

This beautiful and diverse national forest comprises a number of different geographical types. A Vietnam holiday in this region is fascinating, with tropical rainforest, bamboo forest and limestone and karst forest just waiting to be explored. You can expect to be amazed by large, lush green leaves and bushy trees, all beautiful and unique in their own right.

      Ha Long Bay

This UNESCO World Heritage site may be one of the most fascinating places to visit whilst on a Vietnam tour. Located in the north eastern region of the country, this unique area consists of thousands of limestone karsts. In the bay, there are 1,969 limestone islands, densely populated by lush jungle vegetation. If your Vietnam holiday takes you to this interesting part of the country, you will be able to explore the enormous caves found on many of the islands. Larger islands are ideal for holidaymakers, with luxury Vietnam hotels and beautiful beaches making for a holiday paradise.

      Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Another of Vietnam's UNESCO World Heritage Sites is Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Situated in Quang Binh Province of north central Vietnam, this interesting park is known for its beautiful and fascinating network of limetone karsts and grottoes. The most beautiful cave of all is the Phong Nha cave, from which the park gets its name - definitely a must-see site when on a Vietnam holiday. Also found in the park is the Ke Bang forest, another unique and diverse area of great natural beauty.

      Bird watching In Vietnam

      © Photographer: Bogalo | Agency: Dreamstime.com
      Bird designs

      By Dwight Zimpel

Vietnam is the ideal environment for attracting birds and therefore, bird watchers. The geographical location and its climate attract birds from China, the Malay Peninsula and the Himalayan Mountains. These varied locations result in a huge variety bird species making their way to Vietnam during their migrations.

Although Vietnam has been open to tourism for many years, there are still many remote areas that have not seen a huge influx of nature lovers. Vietnam's response to travelers of all kinds; from the bargain traveler looking for a beach to relax on to hard core trekkers looking for a vista unseen by a foreign traveler makes this an ideal destination for serious bird watchers.

Vietnam has a huge variety of birds that are would make a veteran watcher eager to hit the trail. Starting in the north near Tam Dao National Park, (the "Island in the Sky") 70 kilometers northwest from Hanoi, the Short-tailed Parrotbill and Grey Laughingthrush are found among the large feeding flocks of diverse species.

140 km south of Hanoi is Cuc Phuong, first National Park of Vietnam, established in 1962 is home to an astonishing number of localized species, such as Pied Falconet, White-winged Magpie, Rachet-tailed Treepie, and the Limestone Wren Babbler

Among those spotted by recent adventurers in the Central Highlands are Black-crowned Barwing, Laughingthrush, Germain's Peacock Pheasant Collared Laughingthrush, Vietnamese Greenfinch, Red-vented Barbet, Yellow-billed Nuthatch , Chinese Francolin, Pompadour Green Pigeon, Woolly-necked Stork, Bar-bellied Pitta, Indochinese Cuckoo-shrike, Grey-faced Tit Babbler, Green-backed Tit and the Red Crossbill.

These locations provide the best bird watching in Vietnam:

      • Cat Tien National Park, about 3 hours drive from Saigon on the way to Dalat.

      • Ho Tuyen Lam, a few kilometers southwest of Dalat.

      • Mount Lang Bian, 10 kilometers from Dalat.

      • Cat Ba Island, large island located in Halong Bay, northeast Vietnam.

      • Cuc Phuong National Park.

      • Tam Dao.

Even if you're not a dedicated bird watcher, these locations offer any outdoor enthusiast great scenery, mild weather (check for rain though) and the great hospitality of the Vietnamese people.

Cheap food and accommodations round out what attracts travelers to Vietnam.
