Visit Ten Historical Places of Cambodia

By Jonathan Williams

The Kingdom of Cambodia belongs to the Southeast Asian nations. Cambodia relies solely on its textile and garment production and industry as well as tourism to sustain the needs of the country. As for tourism, everybody wants to go visit Cambodia's historical places, and here are some of them.

1.) Angkor Archaeological Park
This is the location of the world-famous Khmer civilization, a civilization so modern during its time that it still awes its present-day visitors. Here, you can visit the Temple of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom as well as the Bayon Temple. The best way to view all that Angkor has to offer is to take one of their tours, since they are more comprehensive than by just touring it yourself.

2.) Bokor National Park
This national park is the site where an old and dilapidated French hill station is located. It is rich in history as a lot of Khmer lost their lives for the creation of this used-to-be magnificent building. But other than this, you can also see a myriad of floras and faunas in the national park.

3.) Kampong Cham
This is Cambodia's third biggest city and is also a popular tourist destination, although not as popular as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. You can also see a lot of beautiful places here like the Nokor Wat as well as the Bamboo Bridge that connects Koh Paen to Mekong. This city is also rich in French influence.

4.) Kompong Luong
This floating town is a must-see if your destination is Cambodia. This is a floating village in Tonle Sap where you can experience Cambodian culture firsthand. It is a delight to any foreigner to see schools and houses and restaurants float over the lake of Tonle Sap.

5.) Phnom Penh
Recognized as the biggest city of Cambodia, it is also Cambodia's capital city. There is a lot you can do here like visiting the Sisowath Bay where you can enjoy its quasi-carnival ambiance. This is also where The Royal Palace is located as well as The National Museum.

6.) Banlung
Here in Banlung, you will definitely enjoy visiting Yeak Laom Volcanic Lake where you can take picnics as well as swim in the lake. Virachey National Park is also located here, or you can visit the Wat Rahtanharahm where you can find the famous reclining Buddha. There are also a lot of wonderful waterfalls that you can visit here like Cha Ong and Kan Chang.

7.) Battambang
These are the must-go-to places in Battambang. You have to visit Wat Banan or what they call small Angkor Wat, and you have to go to Wat Baydamram or the bat temple where you can see fruit bats live in hundreds. Wat Ek Phnom is also a must-see place in this area.

8.) Resort town of Kep
This is a favorite seaside destination in Cambodia. Here, get to enjoy the Cambodian sun as you dine in platforms and eat fresh seafoods, and this is a great place where you can just relax and enjoy the sun and the sea. Visiting the Rabbit Island is also a must as you will definitely enjoy its white sand beaches.

9.) Koh Kong
Koh Kong is more for the nature lover as you will definitely enjoy majestic views of mountains and waterfalls as well as jungles. You can also visit their local zoo and the casino here if you want a more modern touch. Boat tours are popular here as you visit its islands and mangroves.

10.) Siem Reap
It is another favorite tourist spot in Cambodia. What you can see here is the Landmine Museum, which is dedicated to teaching and educating both the locals and the visitors about the hazards of land mines. You can also find a floating village here called the Kampong Phluck.

Taxi's at Tan Son Nhat (Saigon) Airport

© Photographer: Willeecole | Agency: Dreamstime.com
 No taxi cabs allowed

In recent weeks much has been written in the Vietnam News about taxi's, their bad habits and their even worst parking efforts at Ton Son Nhat (Saigon) Airport. Most has been about how travelers (and locals) are constantly getting ripped off for journeys into town. It's a serious problem and one that needs to be addressed.

For most, the Airport is the first or last place they see of a country and it has a major effect on how they view the people and the country itself. By being hassled and ripped off immediately after stepping foot in Vietnam, travelers tend to think everyone is the same - dishonest.

With huge niumbers of complaints, the local authorities and inspection teams are currently running a month long crack down on airport taxi's. Good news right? Well it is if you arrive this this month, but once the crack down is over, the taxis will be back and the problem will continue.

The problems are generally the same - money - and can include such things as

-Refusing to use the meter.
-Demanding extra money at the end of the journey
-Asking double/triple the actual fare.
-Dodgy meters that run at the speed of light.
- Aggressive drivers
- Blatant refusal.

Many of the above I have personally encountered in my time in Vietnam and while you would hope, with the dramatic increase in tourism, the problems would improve, they only get worse. So what can you do to safe the hassles?

- Make sure you ask the driver to use the meter before hoping in.
- Try and use a known taxi company.
- Don't use the "taxi drivers" waiting inside, they are dodgy and will rip you off.
- Good taxi companies have their staff wear uniforms.
- If you encounter any problems, make a complaint to the taxi company, make sure you get the drivers/car number.

For me, I only use one company - Vinasun Taxi. Vina Sun have great drivers, clean cars and always use the meter. Not once have I had a problem with this company. And while I'm sure there are great drivers in all the other companies, the few tossers who think their above the law have ruined it for the majority.

Have you had any drama's catching a taxi from Ton Son Nhat Airport? Tell us all about it by leaving a comment below.

=======================
Note:

Fares from the Airport to District 1 or Pham Ngu Lao should cost around 100,000VND on the meter (give or take). If drivers refuse to use the meter, find another!

Travel With Kids - 8 Tips

© Photographer: Cartoon | Agency: Dreamstime.com
Cool sun

Traveling with kids can be one of two things - horrible or the greatest thing ever!
.
Showing your children new countries, cultures, traditions and allowing them to meet people and try new foods is is simply amazing. Not only for Mum and Dad but also the lessons learnt by the children are invaluable.
.
By taking a few simple measures, traveling with kids can be be easy (or at least easier!), here are a few tips I have learnt the hard way, whilst traveling with our 2 year old!
  1. Deep Breaths - Not into yoga, meditation or tai chi? Neither am I! So when it's on for young and old, slow down and take a deep breath. If you are calm, the kids are calm - mostly!
  2. Toys - Even when traveling you should always carry a few small toys. These are great for you stop for a coffee or something eat. Even a few pencils or small cars/dolls will entertain for a while.
  3. Let em Eat - Kids get bored, hungry, hot, tired and sh*tty quickly, especially if you wondering around ancient temples or pagoda's where they can't scream or play cowboy and Indians! So keep some fruit/biscuits/muesli bars or something handy and when they get restless let 'em eat.
  4. Keep Schedules - Sometimes it's hard when you travel, but try and keep eating and sleeping schedules similar to that of home.
  5. Spare Parts - Always carry spare gear! Nappy's, clothes what ever. If you're starting your travels and flying, spare nappies, water, milk, food are essential, especially if you're delayed at the airport for 6 hours!
  6. Spare Parts for Mum and Dad - For long journey's like flights/buses have a spare t-shirt handy in case the young one chucks! Really bad scene trumping through immigration with vomit down you shirt!
  7. Prams - Lot's of people "don't take a pram, there to big". That's rubbish, take your pram, their a life saver. They make life easy for those long days strolling the streets, give baby somewhere to sleep when out and you can carry other gear as well. Airports in Vietnam and Cambodia will also allow you to take the pram right to departure gate, very handy especially if you have been shopping.
  8. Suck the bottle -  If there's one tip you need to know, read this one. When flying, during take off and landing get you baby to drink water or milk. With change of pressure during landing/take off, our ears hurt and kids cry like mad! Feeding them fluids (or eating) will help unblock their ears and relieve pain.
So don't stop traveling just because of the kids, plan ahead and have a ball!

Motor Bike Riding Tips For Vietnam

Scooters, Ho Chi Minh City
© Photographer: Itinerantlens | Agency: Dreamstime.com

For many travelers heading to Vietnam, hiring a motor bike to explore the sights is becoming ever popular. At around $5 - 8USD a day, it's a cheap and exciting method of travel!
.
What many don't realise is that the traffic conditions, roads and rules are extremely different to what we know from home. At home, rules are strictly (in most cases) adhered to and generally speaking, drivers in the west stay on the correct side of road, stop at red lights and don't carry water buffalo's on their scooters!
.
So if you're hanging out to feel the wind through your hair, read these simple tips and make it an enjoyable and safe journey!
.
1. Protect Your Head - Vietnam Law now requires drivers and passengers of motor bikes to wear a helmet. It is really just common sense, but make sure you don a helmet!

2. Learn Before Your Ride - Many travelers have had none or limited experience riding motor bikes before they hire a bike. If that's you, ask someone for a 5 minute run down on where things are, how to start/stop/accelerate etc. It really makes sense to learn this stuff!

3. Left and Right - A common cause of accidents in Vietnam is travelers riding and then forgetting which lever is the brake and which is the gear lever. Left are gears, right is brake! Forget it, and you may just hit that wall......................!

4. Think Right - Many countries drive on the left, in Vietnam they drive on the right. So always think right, especially when you turn a corner!

5. Expect The Unexpected - Regardless of where you are in Vietnam, someone will drive in front of you, cut you off, run the red light or kids will run onto the road. This is the only guarantee on Vietnam roads, so expect the unexpected!

© Photographer: Caraman | Agency: Dreamstime.com
Easyrider 6. Parking - Don't just leave your bike anywhere, most cities have parking areas to leave your moto. Most cost around 2,000VND and are open until 10pm (some earlier). Hold on to the ticket to get your bike back!

7. Fuel Up - When you rent a motor bike, most will come with no petrol. So make sure you check the tank (don't trust the fuel gauge) and if required, find out where you can purchase fuel.

8. Biggest Wins - Very simple! Biggest vehicle has right of way. Buses, cars and trucks are best avoided, they hurt!

9 - Statistics don't lie - Vietnam, like most countries, has it's fair share of idiots on the road, don't be a sheep and follow them. Statistics don't lie - thousands of people die on the roads ever year. Drive safely and make the most of your experiences in Vietnam!

Phu My Hung - District 7 - HCMC

Travel safe - Adam personally uses and recommends World Nomads Travel Insurance

South Saigon, District 7 or Phu My Hung. What ever you call it, it's the same place!

Newly built, the area is located several km's out of District 1 and has become popular with both locals and expats. Prices for apartments vary greatly, but most ad's running in the Vietnam News would suggest 1000USD per mth is a fair starting point. Large villa's are much more!

The area has plenty of grass, trees and open areas. There are department stores, cinemas, schools, cafes, bars, travel agents, KFC and much more all with in the Phu My Hung area. Also located near by is the Vietnam-French Hospital and South Saigon Garden Club (read about it here).

Below are some images taken recently from Phu My Hung - Enjoy!
